Riders enjoy new course in Crit series round two

The second round of the Tribal Crit cycling series was battled out on Saturday morning at a new course in Beacon Bay.

It was an enjoyable day out and saw some exciting racing and, with the course being used for the first time, it gave cyclists a new challenge.

“It was a fantastic day out and everyone enjoyed the course,” said Tribal’s Cillian Ryan.

“We had some awesome racing on show and with a great field from international triathletes such as Jonas Schomburg all the way down to young kids, it was a good day for everyone.”

The course was across the road from the Daily Dispatch offices and on a 2.5km track with a hill and a few interesting twists and turns on it.

In the main event Alex Odendaal managed to pip veteran cyclist Donovan O’Reilly in an exciting sprint finish in the main category, while Jason Peach rounded out the podium in third.

Top local triathlete Cindy Schwulst took top spot on the women’s side of the main category.

In category two Nathan Trollip took first place ahead of Liam Knight in second, while Matthew Jones finished third. On the women’s side Liesl Prentis took the win.

“What I thought was absolutely fantastic was the amount of kids that came out to support the race,” said Ryan.

“We had kids as young as six years old taking part, while we also had development kids from Mthatha who came up to take part and it was just amazing.”

The first cyclist in, in the U14/U16 age group was Ryno Owen, while Alex Fanicchi in the U10/U12 age category took first place.

In the junior category the first junior male in was Cameron Flanagan and the first junior female was Elne Owen.

“I was very happy with how the day went and believe that this race will keep going from strength to strength,” said Ryan.

“We are very grateful to our sponsors Volvo and Twizza who really come out on the day and help make the event a success.”

The next crit cycling race will be held early next month on May 7 at the East London Grand Prix track where the first race of this five race series was held last month.
