Road warriors to add Vitality in marathon chase

The Siza Vitality Half-Marathon is gearing up for its second showing in Port Alfred next week, as running enthusiasts prepare for another epic race.

The race enjoyed a successful debut last year, with a good turnout that included some of South Africa’s biggest names.

“We had a great first race last year, with a nice number of runners, more than 250, taking part and also some high-profile runners, which made it very exciting,” said race organiser Xola Bomela.

Last year, Uitenhage runner Melikhaya Frans took top honours after a great run, beating well-known athletes such as Bloemfontein’s Nyedimane Chabeli, who came in second, and Port Elizabeth’s double Two Oceans winner George Ntshiliza, who finished third, while in the women’s section, PE’s Ntombesintu Mfundzi took top spot.

A few changes have been made to the race in an effort to enhance and improve on the good platform laid last year.

This year, the race will begin and end at Port Alfred High School, in order to accommodate more people and to help with safety.

“Due to safety measures and because we are expecting more people, we have moved the start and finish of the race to the high school,” said Bomela.

“It is still going to be a very fast race and will see the runners cover most of the same route as last year, just the other way around.”

Also adding to the race is a 5km family fun run, which will give the less fit and more fun-orientated runners a chance to take part.

“The Siza Vitality Half-Marathon and 5km Fun Run is designed to encourage all South Africans, particularly the local community, to appreciate the benefits that a healthy, active lifestyle brings to mental and physical health,” said founder and chairman of the Siza Vitality event Xolani Masiza.

Also, an important part of the race route is that it goes through the townships, with many people coming out to show their support.

“Siza Vitality is proud to be associated with the Siza Vitality Half-Marathon, benefitting the local communities, especially the youth of Ndlambe ...”

Entries for the race are now open online and registration takes place next week Friday and Saturday.
