Petulant Mvula in hot water with BSA

The once bright future of former South African boxing champion Siphosethu Mvula remains bleak after he came in overweight for a bout at the weekend, causing it to be scrapped.

Mvula was scheduled to face Siviwe Hasheni in a junior-featherweight bout at Mdantsane Indoor Centre on Saturday.

However, the Duncan Village boxer was overweight and refused to go for a run to shed the excess kilos.

The bout was to top a Rumble Africa Promotions tournament but Boxing SA called it off due to Mvula’s antics.

To add to Mvula’s woes, BSA-Eastern Cape manager Phakamile Jacobs revealed the Duncan Village boxer was not registered as he had not yet paid for a licence.

Jacobs was livid when Mvula refused to go for the run after agreeing to weigh him despite Mvula not registering as a boxer for the current financial year.

“ I did him a favour by agreeing to weigh-in him on the understanding that he would then bring his documentation so that I could register him,” said Jacobs.

“Instead he came in overweight and when I ordered him to go and shed the excess weight he simply went to his car and refused to go for a run. I am telling you he will not participate in a fight again until he does the right thing.”

Mvula shot to prominence as an unknown youngster when he won the SA junior- bantamweight crown with a decision over Unathi Gqokoma in only his seventh fight.

But the win marked the end of what was expected to be the beginning of bigger things, as he was blighted by a weight struggle, resulting in him moving to the junior-featherweight division.

But he inexplicably refused to vacate the SA junior-bantamweight title, blocking others from fighting for the belt for two years.

Amid that he hopped from one stable to the other as he dumped Downtown Boxing Gymnasium to join Eyethu Boxing Club, only to leave and join Loyiso Mtya under whose tutelage he was stopped in 11 rounds by Toto Helebe in a WBA Pan-African title clash. Now he is guided by Mongameli and Mongezi Smith under whom he seems to have gone back to his antics.

Jacobs could not readily say if Mvula would be suspended for his antics last Saturday, saying he would deal with his case if a bout was scheduled for him.
