Rivals itching to get right into thick of the action

Club rugby is back on the scene following the long weekend break as rivalries resume across the Border region.

Six Super League matchups head up the weekend of rugby, with teams looking to pick up where they left off before the break and solidify their standings on the log.

After just two rounds of action it is very tight at the top with the leading three teams all locked on nine points, just separated by points difference while the fourth team on the log is only one point back.

Police rugby club are the current pacesetters sitting at the top and began their season with a strong 36-15 win over Buffs before then defeating Cambridge 29-3.

They now host the Berlin Tigers at Police Park, with the Tigers having lost both of their opening games and Police will be aiming to claim another good win.

“We have had a good start to the season and we are in good form,” said Police coach Alistair Alexander.

“Berlin Tigers is going to be a tough game, but the guys are confident and ready for the match and are looking forward to the challenge.”

In what could possibly be the match of the weekend the third on the log Swallows host the second on the log Walter Sisulu University All Blacks at the NU1 Rugby Stadium in Mdantsane.

Swallows beat Berlin Tigers 29-19 in their opening match before winning 23-18 against Breakers in Queenstown in their second, while WSU started with a 19-6 win over Winter Rose and followed that up with a 29-24 win over Ocean Sweepers.

Both these teams will want to claim a win and keep in the upper echelons of the league.

Defending super league champions Old Selbornians, currently fourth on the log just a point behind the top three, will be taking on Breakers at Mike Pendock Motors Park tomorrow.

Old Boys have enjoyed a strong start to their title defence with good wins over Cambridge rugby club 21-10 and the Fort Hare Blues 19-10, and they will be gunning for another win against a Breakers team that has suffered two losses in their opening games.

Mid-table sides Africans and Winter Rose will be taking on each other at the Victoria Grounds in King William’s Town. Both teams have a win and a loss under their belts and will be aiming to add another win and move up the table.

Other mid-table sides Fort Hare Blues and Buffs will be up against bottom of the log sides Cambridge and Ocean Sweepers.

Ocean Sweepers in second last place will hope homeground advantage will give them the edge against Buffs when they play at the Mpundu Rugby Field in Nxaruni, while bottom-of-the-table Cambridge face the Blues at the Davidson Rugby Stadium in Alice.

All the Super League club games start at 3.30pm today.
