Old Boys rule the roost in action-packed league ties

Club hockey will be in full flow once again this coming weekend after returning from a two-week break last weekend.

Some big matches will be taking place in the various divisions and rivalries should be back in full force.

In the men’s premier division all the big players will be in action as United A play Bohs, Parkside and Buffs square off and Old Boys take on Phoenix, all on Sunday afternoon.

On the women’s premier side Bohs Premier are up against Phoenix, while Parkside entertain Buffs.

Arguably the two main matches on show were the men’s Premier League clash between Old Boys and Parkside and the women’s premier match between Old Boys and Bohs, with both Old Boys sides coming out on top.

In the men’s match on Sunday Old Boys edged Parkside 5-4 after Parkside had led 4-3 at the break.

Parkside were on top early and held the halftime lead thanks to goals from Elgie Marillier, Reberto Bosman, Lee Prinsloo and Diego Faltein. However, Old Boys scored goals through Brad Pautz, Asher Wheatley, Matt Dewar, two through Luzuko Nsiba and managed to equalise and take the lead in the second period and survive a late onslaught to win.

“I was very happy with the win. The guys showed fantastic character to come back from 4-1 down after 15 minutes and take the win,” said Old Boys player-coach Leroy Phillips.

In the women’s match Old Boys claimed a strong 4-1 win over the Bohs premier side.

It was a bit of revenge for Old Boys after they went down to Bohs A team a few weeks ago.

Old Boys’ goals came from Francisca Drakoh, Angela Hobbs and two from penalty corners from captain Jenna McNamara. Paige Meecham replied with Bohs’ only strike.

In the other men’s premiership matches to be played over the weekend Phoenix beat Buffs 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from PJ Holster, while Cameron Huber supplied the other goal, while Buffs goal was scored by Josh Vengadajellum.

The other women’s Premier league matches on the weekend saw Bohs A beat Buffs 1-0 thanks to a goal scored by Wendy Stuart off a penalty corner, while Parkside comfortably defeated Phoenix 9-1, with goals for Parkside from Tracy Lootz, Zimkhitha Smayile (two), Bianca Wood (four), Charmorne Theron and Gay-lee Jasson, while Phoenix’s solitary strike came from Noleen Ruiters.

Other men’s matches over the weekend saw three games played in the First Division and two in the second.

In the First Division United Masters beat Parkside 3-0, United B beat Bohs Lightening 5-4 and Phoenix defeated Bohs Vets 3-0, while the Second Division saw some big scores with Buffs seconds claiming a 5-0 win over Buffs Griffins and Punters winning 9-2 against Bohs Thunder.

In women’s first league action Phoenix Divas comfortably beat Fort Hare 4-0 while Parkside scored a tight 1-0 win over Old Boys.

The women’s second league saw two games played on the weekend with Stutterheim A beating Parkside seconds 2-1 in the one and Africans defeating Buffs 3 2-0 in the other.

Another full weekend of hockey will be in store this coming weekend.
