Sundowns now just one point short of Chiefs’ points record

A wonder goal from Khama Billiat handed Mamelodi Sundowns a 1-0 victory over their closest challengers Bidvest Wits on Wednesday night and kept the newly crowned champions on course for a record haul of points.

With the league title already decided and Wits secure in second place‚ this game was for pride and prestige only but certainly enough of a spur to ensure a game of high tempo and exquisite skills in the first half and tired and labored in the second.

Sibusiso Vilakazi‚ a player that Pitso Mosimane has been purring over for seasons now‚ was back to his imperious best in leading Wits but it was the precocious Billiat who stole away the spotlight.

Following on his stupendous long-range goal on Saturday in the African Confederation Cup‚ the Zimbabwean international hit another from distance‚ banging the ball from halfway inside the attacking half so that it looped over Moeneeb Joseph and into the Wits goal‚ catching the home goalkeeper off his line.

Nothing it seems can go wrong for Sundowns at the moment‚ as they bagged a seventh win in their last nine league outings and moved to 68 points‚ one short of the record that Kaizer Chiefs set last year for the most points in single season since the PSL was reduced to 16 teams.

Victory in their last game at home to third placed Platinum Stars on Saturday‚ May 21 will allow Sundowns to claim a record breaking season – they are now also 11 points clear at the top.

Wits were actually the better side in the first half as Vilakazi regularly cut through their defence. But they did not play a target man and much of Vilakazi’s efforts came to naught.

After half-time Gavin Hunt brought on bustling Joaquim Lupeta but he again missed chances.

Instead Sundowns cleverly slowed down the pace to take the sting out of the home team.

There was also a good save from Denis Onyango to deny a 54th minute header to deny and Bongani Khumalo and Vilakazi had a chance in the final 10 minutes.

“It was important for me to win here to show we are true champions‚” added Pitso Mosimane at the end. – Tiso Black Star Group Digital
