‘Dance’ elated with Chippa’s dazzling show

Chippa United coach Dan “Dance” Malesela says entertaining the team’s supporters is what he is all about and he is thrilled his men were able to display their attacking skills in beating Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night.

Malesela says providing an exciting brand of soccer is the most important aspect for him and Chippa United displayed all their tricks and skills en route to a comfortable 2-0 win at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The win against the Soweto giants has eased the pressure off Chippa going into their last fixture of the season against Kaizer Chiefs next Saturday as they have already qualified for the top eight.

The Port Elizabeth-based side are sixth on the log with 42 points from 29 games.

Speaking to the media after the game Malesela said: “I think it was quite an exciting game for the fans. Like I said before the game I knew Pirates would not sit back and do what normally happens, this thing called park the bus, and we would not do that as well.

“It was obviously going to be an open game and the evidence was there with the chances we created on both sides. Probably more goals could have been scored in the first half by both teams. It’s good entertainment for the supporters and that is what football is.”

Despite a shaky defence late in the first half which saw the Chippa goalkeeper left unguarded, the former Bucs skipper said he was happy with how his team defended against his old team.

“We have been trying to fix our defending. You cannot be complete every time. But you also cannot have a situation in a match where there is not a shot at goals.

“Sometimes you expect these things and the goalkeeper is part of that game, so if something goes past the defenders it’s the job of the goalkeeper to save.

“That is why we would never see our goalkeeper running towards the defenders because I don’t like that, it’s his job as the goalkeeper to save the goals,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pirates coach Eric Tinkler congratulated Chippa on the result and said they played better football on the night. “The chances that they created they obviously took. We are disappointed with the defensive frailties that we showed tonight.

“The most disappointing thing for me is we knew where their strength lay. Particularly with Joseph Molangoane. He is actually one of our players and we know him extremely well.”

The loss for Pirates has seen the team drop to seventh place on the log with 40 points from 29 games.

Despite the setback Tinkler said their performance against Chippa was the best of their previous three matches.

He said there were some positives to take from the game going into their semifinal fixture of the Nedbank Cup against Free State Stars tomorrow.

The former Bafana Bafana player said that spectators will see a different Pirates against Stars.

“What one has to remember is that we are going into the semifinals, that the players are well aware of,” said Tinkler.

“They know this could be our saving grace for the season, that we end up winning a trophy. I think you will definitely see a different performance from our team come Saturday.”
