Neighbours to go head-on in varsity battle

A cracking club rugby battle is on the cards when rivals Walter Sisulu University (WSU) All Blacks and the University of Fort Hare Blues clash at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London at 5pm this afternoon.

The match will be a curtainraiser to the Border Bulldogs v Leopards Absa Currie Cup Qualifying match and will see old rivalries resume as the two teams fight for supremacy in the Border Super League.

“The hype and vibe is always there, it is a big derby match for us and the guys are looking forward to it,” said WSU coach Sipho Metula.

“Coming back from the varsity Sevens as well, we played each other twice with us winning the first game and Fort Hare the second so the rivalry is very strong.”

Currently the All Blacks are one of the competitions pacesetters, having won all three of their matches so far and sitting third on the Super League table.

They will be eager to keep their unbeaten run going and beat a close rival in the process.

The Blues however are not far behind, sitting third on the log, Trailing WSU by four points and only having lost to the defending champion Old Boys team so far.

Both teams come into the match off the back of wins.

The All Blacks edged Swallows 13-10 in a tight battle at the NU1 Stadium in Mdantsane last week, which was a big result as Swallows had made a good start to the season.

“We had a good win against Swallows last weekend, it was close but the players put in a good show to win,” said Metula.

UFH defeated Cambridge 19-12 at the Davidson rugby stadium in Alice to bounce back well from the previous rounds loss.

Both teams will aim to take that momentum into the match as they hunt another victory to keep themselves in the upper echelons of the league.

“The last time we played each other we drew 10-10 and it was a game where both teams did not want to open up and make mistakes but I believe that tomorrow will see both teams go out guns blazing,” said Metula.

Of added excitement for both sets of players will be that the match will be live on SuperSport 1.

“It is a great thing for the players and the university because the players will be able to showcase their talent while the university also gets marketed,” explained Metula.
