Teams to square off in the SAB League playoffs

The eight teams that will be taking part in the SAB League provincial playoffs have been confirmed by the Safa Eastern Cape office.

The annual event will take place in East London on Saturday and Sunday at both the Jan Smuts Stadium and the Buffalo City Stadium.

Amavarara FC, who will represent Safa Chris Hani region, have vowed they are in the playoffs for one reason – to gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.

After dominating their regional league – without losing a single match and drawing just twice – the KuTsembeyi-based outfit stand a good chance of achieving their goal.

But the club’s coach, Bulelani Matrose, admitted it would not be easy because they would be playing against the best of the best – teams that can also boast of being champions in their respective regions.

Matrose said: “We believe we stand a good chance to do well and qualify for the ABC Motsepe League.

“However, we do not undermine the other teams who we believe qualified through hard work and are also in it to win it.”

Amavarara will certainly not have it easy, especially against the hosts, Safa Buffalo City reps Mdantsane Mighty Bucks, who will have the much needed home ground advantage.

Historically, Safa Nelson Mandela Bay Metro clubs have proved to be a tough nut in this competition.

On Saturday they are represented by a Callies FC outfit that will be keen to follow in the footsteps of Young Ideas, who represented NBM with success in the previous playoffs.

Walter Sisulu University will also be back to right wrongs, having fallen short in last year’s playoffs.

They are the reigning champions of Safa Amathole, another region that is no stranger to controversy, just like Safa BC.

The experience the students gained in the same competition last year should be enough to see them manoeuvre their way to promotion.

Failing to advance once again would be unfortunate for an institution with an abundance of student talent from across the province.

Mighty Bucks will be playing in the colours of Safa Joe Gqabi, a region currently not represented in the ABC Motsepe League.

For a region that produced Bafana Bafana forward Bongani Ndulula, Mighty Bucks should push for promotion, which will also assist in spreading the provincial league across the province as it is currently monopolised by two regions – Safa BC and Safa NMB.

To complete the playoffs, 2010 Storm Breakers are in on behalf of Safa OR Tambo, while United 11 come in for Safa Sarah Baartman and City Lads for Alfred Nzo.

The draw will be conducted this evening in Komani.
