All to play for as hopefuls in hunt for glory

Two ABC Motsepe League spots are at stake with eight clubs in the running.

This is the story that is the SAB provincial playoffs which start in East London today.

The question in every football follower’s mind is, who will be the two to be promoted when the tournament ends tomorrow.

All one needs to do is win three matches and promotion is guaranteed.

The Group of Death, Group A features the hosts Mdantsane Mighty Bucks, Callies from Nelson Mandela Bay region while WSU are also in the mix, so is 2010 Storm Breakers.

The hosts have the added advantage of being in their own backyard which should give them that extra something to come out tops.

But the Mdantsane side’s progression to the playoffs has not been one free from controversy after they won 19-0 against Parkside Sporting towards the end of the Buffalo City SAB Regional League.

WSU, who are in the competition for the second year in a row having fallen short last year, boast experience that might have helped them to know the tricks of what one needs to do in order to prevent bad history repeating itself.

This bolsters them to snatch the title in the face of the home side. The OR Tambo region representative, Storm Breakers have been there before.

However, theirs two years ago in Aliwal North was a controversial one in probably the most chaotic provincial playoffs yet with the team winning by as many as over 20 goals – something unprecedented in organised football. They are high in confidence coming to this event. “We promise nothing but the best, die poppe sal dans,” they wrote in their Facebook page.

Callies will be hoping to emulate Young Ideas, their neighbours who got promoted last year.

Furthermore for Callies, Nelson Mandela Bay clubs are generally more organised compared to their opponents from other regions. This should surely give them an edge.

Only the club at the top after the round-robin matches have been played progresses to the second division.

Then there is Group B, which looks easy since it features clubs from small Safa regions.

This may actually prove the toughest group with all four clubs in it with a hope of finishing at the summit.

Chris Hani Region’s Amavarara have already promised, even before they knew their group, that they will win.

But Mighty Bucks of Joe Gqabi are hoping to be first from that part of the province since they are currently not represented in the provincial league.

United 11 from Sarah Baartman region will hope to get promotion after Cacadu United from their area was relegated last season.

City Lads will hope to be the second side from Alfred Nzo in the second division to join Kokstad Liverpool. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
