Orlando Pirates set to sign James Okwuosa

James Okwuosa is set to depart Chippa United and join Orlando Pirates‚ club sources say.

The Chippa captain‚ who proved a bedrock of their best-ever season as they finished the recent Premier Soccer League campaign in sixth place‚ is at the end of his contract and has been on offer in the market place since January.

But while league runners-up Bidvest Wits were among those who turned down a chance to sign him‚ the Nigerian international is now set to be unveiled as a new Buccaneer‚ filing the gap left by the recent retirement of Siyabonga Sangweni.

This comes after an impressive season as Chippa finished sixth in the standings with Okwuosa skippering the team and rarely missing a match.

Okwuosa won a first cap for the Super Eagles against South Africa in Durban in 2013 and was in contention for a place at 2014 World Cup in Brazil but eventually did not make the final 23-man Nigerian squad.

He came to South Africa as a trialist for Ajax Cape Town in 2012. He played for the club in a dream debut against touring Manchester United but surprisingly‚ Ajax decided in the end not to sign him.

Instead he was snapped up by Chippa for whom he was a regular through an unsuccessful season that saw the then Cape Town-based club relegated.

Chippa spent just one season in the lower tier and completed their transformation into a side capable of playing some of the best football in SA in the recent topflight campaign.
