Exciting new Legends ultra set to take off like a bomb

A new and improved Legends Marathon is on the cards this year as the ever- popular race continues to experience growth.

The main race on October 1, finishes at the Phillip Kahts Softball Stadium in Bunkers Hill, which now serves as the event headquarters.

“It is going to be a bigger event this year, we are expecting more people and it will be more exciting,” Legends Marathon founder Luthando Bara said.

“We always listen to athletes and fans when they give us ideas ... we have incorporated a number of new things to improve and add to this year’s event,” he said.

This year, a new race has been added to the roster, a 10km run – the others being the main 68km event, the 21km race and the 5km fun run. Due to the packed schedule, the Legends extravaganza will be run over two days now instead of one, with the fun run taking place on the Friday and the other races on October 1.

“We had quite a few athletes telling us that we needed to have a 10km race and we have now added that to the event, so that should bring even more runners in,” said Bara.

“The fun run will be held on the Friday and we are seriously considering having a night race which I think would be very popular and a lot of fun.”

Also adding to the event’s interest, will be its connection to Fort Hare University’s centenary celebrations. The Legends race will be used as a vehicle to honour the centenary celebrations.

“The Legends race will be celebrating another legend in the University of Fort Hare, in honour of their centenary,” said Bara.

“We will be donating 30% of all the race entries back to the university and we expect quite a few runners to come from the university.”

The route has also changed in tandem with the venue change. This change Bara believes will help improve the race and make it safer and more enjoyable.

“I think it’s a really nice route that the runners will enjoy and we can hopefully make it a popular one that is used for many years,” admitted Bara.

“It is much safer and clearer and I believe that the safety of the runners is paramount to hosting a successful race.”

With things looking up in terms of growth , it will be interesting to see what platform can be set in respect of how it evolves and improves in years to come.

“We are trying to start a legacy here, we want this race to become a focal point in the city and we will keep improving and building onto the event every year,” said Bara.

Entries for this year’s ultra-marathon are open and interested runners can find entry forms at Border Athletics offices at Jan Smuts Stadium or Legends Marathon offices, or provincial federation offices.
