Old Boys have some scores to settle

Club rugby action is set to light up the midweek night when Old Selbornians and the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) All Blacks clash in what should be a feisty matchup at Mike Pendock Motors Park tonight.

Old Boys relinquished their place at the top of the Border Super League table with a shock loss to Swallows in Mdantsane this past weekend and they will be eager to get back to winning ways.

“We had a loss of concentration and Swallows caught us napping,” admitted Old Boys coach David McCallum.

“The guys know the mistakes they made, and they know what they need to improve on.”

The loss was Old Boys first in two years and will certainly give other teams confidence as the aura of invincibility that had been built up over their win streak will fade a bit after the result.

“The guys are hurting from the loss, which was our first in two years, they are upset about it and know what they need to do to fix it,” said McCallum.

“I expect them to come out firing on Wednesday against WSU.”

This makes things very interesting at the top of the log as it has brought the All Blacks right back into the mix and this should see things go right down to the wire.

Currently, Police lead the log on 35 points thanks to a crushing 72-0 win against Africans over the past weekend that allowed them to leapfrog Old Boys, while they slipped to second on 32 points after their 15-5 loss to Swallows.

The WSU All Blacks are third, level on points with Old Boys, after they claimed an important 37-15 bonus point win against Buffs, and they will look to take this momentum into the Old Boys game.

“WSU have managed to do really well to be where they are on the log, improving where they were last year, but they are coming to us and we are the defending champions, but whether they are the underdogs or us is hard to say at the moment,” explained McCallum.

Tonight’s match is thus an extremely important one with both sides as they know that a defeat could end their chances of winning the league as the gap to Police could be too large.

With Police up against Ocean Sweepers this weekend away, they will still be expected to claim a full house of points, so Old Boys and WSU will need to keep in touch with them.

“It is do-or-die, if we want to have a shot at retaining our title we have got to knock WSU over and then the Police game will essentially be a final,” said McCallum.

“The WSU game will be extremely competitive and we are looking forward to the challenge.”

The match kicks off at 7pm tonight.
