Club boss feels pain of a failed bid

Tornado FC chairman Simphiwo “Mawawa” Nyobo has expressed disappointment over his club’s failure to progress in the ongoing National First Division promotion playoffs.

He voiced his disappointment after the Mdantsane-based side managed just a draw and two defeats, results that ruled them out in terms of the possibility of topping Group A.

However, Nyobo believes them falling short was due to many factors, some of which were beyond their control.

Among other, he highlighted the lack of financial backing by the Buffalo City Metro Municipality which has instead thrown millions of rands into Port Elizabeth-based Chippa United’s coffers.

Apparently BCM, who remained tight-lipped after Nyobo approached them, only replied on Wednesday saying they could not help.

But by then it was too late, as Tornado had already failed in their bid for promotion to the NFD.

The club boss however expressed gratitude to the Eastern Cape department of sport, recreation, arts and culture who footed the bill for accommodation and the week-long camp they had before the tournament.

Nyobo, although letdown by the results, was pleased with overall play. “If you check, we lost by a solitary goal in both matches in the two games which is encouraging and proves we are not a weak team.”

Nyobo said they would go back to the provincial league and try their luck again. He however stressed that without financial backing, it was mission impossible for any club to dream of promotion.

“You cannot compete with teams that everyone can see have got the buy-in of local government from the areas they are from.

“Had BCM come to the party, I tell you now things would have turned out differently because there are things that we could have done to perform better but we could not because of empty pockets.”

Tornado finish their campaign against KwaZulu-Natal champions Kings United this afternoon at 12.30pm in Botshabelo.
