Mboyiya is no paper tiger

On paper Jasper Seroka should have no problem clinging to his SA junior-lightweight title when he risks it against local challenger Aphiwe Mboyiya.

But try telling that to Mboyiya and the southpaw becomes animated.

The pair clash tonight in a Zbashy Promotions event, in association with Amangubo Boxing Events at Orient Theatre.

The bumper bill will be headlined by the IBO International featherweight title clash between Macbute Sinyabi and Tanzanian Francis Miyeyusho.

There will also be appearances by Makazole Tete, while Bongani Mahlangu of Soweto and Mdantsane’s Bonakele Bhikitsha will be involved in another national title duel.

But the spotlight will be on Mboyiya who has experienced an upsurge in his career, since teaming up with KC Cengani.

Mboyiya burst onto the scene as an unknown 20-year-old, when he dethroned heavy favourite Sydney Maluleka to take the featherweight diadem. After one defence against Lucky Khwaza, he was dethroned by Lusanda Komanisi as his career suddenly nosedived.

He lost all interest in boxing and roamed the streets with friends, until he met Cengani who knocked the left- hander back to shape.

Since then he has not looked back, especially after Cengani took him to Xaba Promotions which is the sister promotions outfit of Zbashy.

While Seroka has derailed many a boxing career in the region, including a crushing defeat of Xolani Mcotheli before going down swinging to Xolisani Ndongeni in an IBO lightweight title clash, Mboyiya is unfazed by the task at hand.

“It is time Seroka is sent home packing now,” he said via Cengani.

“We will send him to retirement and the boy is brimming with confidence.”

Mboyiya, who has suffered just two losses, the other being at the hands of Sinyabi in the Premier Boxing League (PBL) in 2013 can be as awkward as they come when he is on form.

Cengani says he has whipped the boy into shape and has no illusions about whose hand will be raised tonight after the fight.

“We know Seroka and we watched him when he beat Mcotheli, when he lost to Ndongeni and when he beat Koos Sibiya. Believe you me we have a strategy for him.”

Seroka is a veteran of 31 bouts, 26 wins stretched over a 14-year period of fighting under different promoters.

On the other hand, Mboyiya has amassed almost half of Seroka’s bouts and will therefore enter the ring being the fresher of the two.

Meanwhile, Mahlangu has vowed to continue his destruction of Eastern Cape boxers predicting that Bhikitsha would go the same route – like others before him.

Since suffering a controversial loss to Vuyisile Bebe in their tragic fight, Mahlangu has been beating up local boxers such as Mfusi Maxhayi, Toto Helebe, Siviwe Hasheni ... the list is endless.
