Buffalo City boosts junior talent

Exciting junior tennis action will be in full flow today when the Tennis Buffalo City (TBC) endorsed Mini 3 tennis tournament is battled out at Selborne Park over the next two days.

Tennis Buffalo City will be using this event as a launching path for future tennis tournaments to be played in East London.

According to chairperson of Tennis Buffalo City, Neil Naidoo, a previous tournament had to be cancelled due to poor entries, which he claimed has robbed players, especially juniors, from the opportunity to play and be exposed to the Tennis South Africa (TSA) ranking tournaments.

“As Tennis Buffalo City we would like to appeal to the East London tennis community, including parents and coaches, to encourage their kids to participate in these tournaments, especially the next Mini 4 TSA ranking tournament on the 24th and 25th of July at Selborne Park.” said Nadioo.

This weekend’s mini 3 tournament has some impressive young local talent who will be out in force looking to impress.

An epic finale is expected in the open section by TBC with the likes of Dylan Smith, Kwanda-Kwanele Mbalekwa and Avela Ndlabu going for the title.

According to TBC other top players will also be showcased, with Luke Taylor and Kiaan Subboo on the U14 boys front, Nikhil Nadioo for the U12 boys and Devina Pillay on the U12 girls side.

The action will get under way today at 8am and play should continue until around 4.30pm.

Tomorrow play will again start at 8am but should conclude by 11am, with the finals to be played in that time.

A number of top tennis players have emerged from East London over the years, including Raven Claassen from Buffalo Flats.

TBC will also be embarking on various other campaigns that they hope will bring tennis back to its former glory in the region.

One of these includes the Play and Stay tennis programme, which will see the development of players from four years and older get the basic skills and development to go on to play on bigger courts.

“The success and growth of tennis in East London is only possible through working together as parents, coaches and an involved school structure,” said TBC Public Relations Officer, Riagan Smith.
