BOXING legend Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu was “touched” by what Friends of Vuyani Bungu (FVB) did for him at the weekend.

More than a 1000 people descended on Bungu’s home in West Bank, East London to celebrate his life and achievements in the sport of boxing.

But what was meant to be “just a braai” became such a massive event it had to become more formal, with speakers taking turns at the podium.

The erstwhile king of super bantamweight was pleased that many who attended were people with no direct involvement or passion in boxing.

“My achievements are not only for me and my family but for all people of Buffalo City and South Africa as a whole.

“It was touching and humbling to have so many people gathered at one place to celebrate my achievements and I must say I feel blessed to have Friends of Vuyani Bungu who put together the event.”

Chairperson of the FVB committee, Masiza Mazizi said the turnout took them by surprise.

Mazizi said: “For us we thought it was just going to be an informal braai to celebrate Vuyani but it would seem he is loved because the number of people who attended exceeded our expectations.

“It was more pleasing to see that people from all walks of life were in attendance with sport administrators, politicians and ordinary people who admire Vuyani for what he did for this country inside the ring.”

Eastern Cape Boxing Promoters Association’s Ayanda Matiti was in attendance, outgoing BCM mayor Alfred Mtsi, former BCM Mayor Zukiswa Faku and several sport legends.

Mazizi said FVB had big plans in the pipeline for Bungu.

Such plans include developing the former boxer into being a brand name generating money.

They would also assist Bungu in all his endeavours, firstly by supporting him to succeed in growing the sport in his role as recently-appointed IBO ambassador in Africa. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
