The University of Fort Hare (UFH) found the going tough as they crashed to a big 39-17 defeat against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in their opening University Sport South Africa (USSA) B division clash at Old Selbornians yesterday afternoon.

The UWC forwards put in a monstrous performance that gave their exciting backline the perfect platform to attack off as they ran in six tries to Fort Hare’s three.

“I am reasonably happy, we scored some really good tries from setplay which was good too see and we had a decent game all round,” said UWC coach Lionel Langenhoven.

Fort Hare will take some confidence from the game after they finished the second half well to dominate the final few minutes and dot down twice in that period, which they can then take into their next match.

“It has been a hard year for us, we are in a rebuilding phase and have a number of youngsters coming through who are still finding their feet, so I was very proud of how they came back at the end of the game and managed to score a few tries,” said Fort Hare coach Carlos Katywa.

“We will look to build on that in our next game and hopefully get a positive result.”

The first half of the match was a bit of a scrappy affair as handling errors and a few penalties against them meant UWC only managed to score two tries and kick a penalty despite dominating the entire half and they went into the break 15-0 up.

UWC then came tearing out in the second half as they ran in four tries in the first 25 minutes, and converting two, while Fort Hare did manage a try in between those efforts after a good kick and chase saw wing Athipila Mhlotywa go over in the right-hand corner.

The last 10 minutes then belonged to Fort Hare as first centre Lithobile Mgwangke sliced through to score a converted try and then Zanoxolo Qwele went over at the back of a good driving maul on fulltime.

It was just consolation scores as UWC had sealed the win through tries from wing Peter Williams (2), captain and lock Jose Julies (2), wing Marcus Kleinbooi and flank Matthew le Roux while flyhalf Aidynn Cupido slotted three conversions and a penalty.
