Rugby action is heating up as the University Sport South Africa Rugby Week enters its second day of action today with some big matches in the offing.

The headlining A division will see four teams battling it out to make Friday’s final, with Eastern Cape hope Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University up against Pretoria powerhouse UP Tuks and defending champs University of Johannesburg taking on the University of Stellenbosch.

NMMU enjoyed a top start to the week with a confident 27-17 victory over North West University Pukke, and they will look to take that momentum into the Tuks game today.

NMMU’s win was built on a powerful defensive effort that kept Pukke out on their line numerous times, while they also took most of the chances that came their way, and they will be looking for more of the same against Tuks.

“There are small things that we are working on to get things right but I am happy with how things are looking so far,” said NMMU coach David Maidza.

“Our defence showed a lot of character in our first match and hopefully we can keep building from here.”

Tuks enjoyed a very good start to their week as they cruised to a comfortable 38-5 win over Central University of Technology (CUT) and they will be looking to ride that momentum into the NMMU game.

This should be a match of two attacking sides trying to breach two very good defences and seeing who comes out on top.

In the other big match UJ will want to continue their superb form as they take on Maties.

2015 USSA Week champs UJ certainly made their intentions known with a 47-12 demolition job of the University of Cape Town (UCT) on day one and they will be looking for a similar performance against Maties.

Maties will, however, be buoyed from their very close 31-29 win over the University of Free State (Shimlas) and will take heart from edging that entertaining encounter.

Old Selbornains A field will be the venue for both cracking matches, with NMMU and Tuks first up at 1.30pm, while UJ kick-off against Maties straight after at 3.10pm.

Other A division matches on the day will see Pukke and CUT up against one another at Buffalo Park, with kick-off at 10.10am, while Shimlas play against UCT on Old Selbornians B field, with the match getting under way at 1.30pm.
