Raven Klaasen continues to fly the South African flag at Wimbledon

STAFF REPORTER

Raven Klaasen will fly South Africa’s lone flag at Wimbledon later on Wednesday as he seeks a place in the semifinals of the men’s doubles at the Championships.

The 33-year-old from King William’s Town plays with his American partner Rajeev Ram against the second seeded Bryan twins‚ who have won three previous Wimbledon titles and a total of 16 Grand Slams.

Doubles specialist Klaasen is ranked 16 in world doubles‚ just one place below the career high he achieved in April and has already earned R3‚5-million in prize money this year.

He and Ram won at Halle in Germany on grass last month in the build-up to Wimbledon and on Monday eliminated the fifth seeded pair of Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Marcelo Melo of Brazil in three sets.

The 38-year-old Bryan brothers present a much tougher challenge as the long-standing pin-up pair of men’s doubles.

But Klaasen and Ram might have as psychological edge‚ having beaten the Bryans 6-4 7-6 in the semifinal at Halle and also at the Australian Open at the start of the year.

Despite 10 titles on the ATP Tour‚ Klaasen has not yet won a coveted Grand Slam title but has a strong opportunity at Wimbledon. — Tiso Black Star Group Digital
