Rugby festival kicks off

Junior rugby action will be in full swing this morning with a mini-rugby festival at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium.

Umzuvukile Sport Development and Management is running the festival as part of their 10-week Get into Rugby project which started back in June.

“We are very excited,” said Umzuvukile managing director Mzuvukile Tempi yesterday.

“It is going to be a great morning of fun for the schools and kids involved and it should be an exciting day for everyone.”

Eighteen junior primary schools from around Mdantsane will be attending the festival with a host of kids from each school taking part.

“We are expecting each school to send 120 kids so we are looking at having over 2000 children taking part,” said Tempi. “It is going to be a very busy day.”

Umzuvukile Sport Development and Management is a non-profit organisation (NPO) established to “change the face of sport in South Africa so that all of the major sporting codes reflect the demographics of this country”, Tempi said.

“Through our extensive inter action with SA Rugby an agreement was reached for a partnership with Global Performance Management – which is an agent for the world rugby programme Get into Rugby – to start .”

Today’s festival is set to be the first of many, with the next due in late September.

“Our festival in September will be very exciting as Supersport will be televising it on the Blitz programme,” said Tempi.

It is hoped that this programme can become a permanent feature in East London and that it can grow and continue in the years to come.

With Umzuvukile Sport Development and Management as the driving force behind the mini-festival, it is a goal the NPO hopes to achieve.

“The sustainability of it is based on our performance so we must make sure that everything is done right,” said Tempi.

“However, we still have a long way to go to make sure it is successful and one of the biggest challenges is getting support from local businesses, particularly local government entities.”

The day’s play at Sisa Dukashe gets under way at 9am today and the games should all be finished by 12 noon.
