Hundreds of fans arrived at the OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning to welcome the South African Olympic Games team.

Carrying placards and flags‚ those waiting at the international arrivals terminal kept their energy high with school war cries and dancing.

Workers in overalls‚ a group of school children and family members were among those there to welcome home the team from Rio.

The Grade 6 and 7 class from Solid Foundations Primary School were especially excited as they waved flags singing sports war cries — 12-year-old Nivikar Ravinand said the Olympics was a topic they had covered in the syllabus.

“My mom forced me‚ and theses guys are famous. It’s exciting‚ it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity‚” he said.

Christopher McIntosh‚ 13‚ said: “I’m here because the Olympians are an inspiration to all of us and we can learn from them.”

Singing in perfect harmony were the members of the African National Congress Women’s League’s young women’s desk. Spokesperson Pinkie Numa said while they were there to support those who won medals‚ and also to encourage those who had returned empty-handed. – Tiso Black Star Group Digital/The Times
