The Daily Dispatch Cycle Tour and Mountain Bike Challenge received a timely boost yesterday when it was revealed that the Buffalo City Municipality and BCM Tourism were coming on board as main sponsors for the event taking place this weekend.

The ever-popular weekend of cycling action has been a regular feature on the cycling calendar each year and has grown steadily.

“This is a fantastic event on the sporting calendar in Buffalo City and we are very excited to be involved with it,” BCM spokesman Sibusiso Cindi said.

“Besides the growing of the sport itself, we also get a number of people who come in as visitors to this area, they get exposed to what we can offer in terms of tourism and some of them will even come back with their families next time.

“We would like to call on the people of East London to come out and embrace the event and welcome the visitors to Buffalo City and show them what we have to offer.”

BCM also believes that the race is an integral part of the sporting calendar and is extremely important to keep it going, so as to help build credibility of East London being a top sporting destination in the country.

“We feel that the Dispatch Cycle race is a very important race to have and we think that cycling is not that common a sport around here, so we need to expose it to our young people and we want to see the sport growing,” said Cindi.

“We also want to build Buffalo City as a sports event capital, especially in this region, we have invited big soccer teams to play here, we have held massive boxing tournaments here, we are already known as the Mecca of boxing. We want to tap into that and spread our interest into other sporting codes.”

Daily Dispatch marketing manager, Ryan Megaw, believes that it is a very exciting time for the event and thinks that it can continue to grow.

“Daily Dispatch is thrilled to have Buffalo City Municipality and Buffalo City Tourism come on board to be naming sponsors for the Daily Dispatch Cycle Tour and Mountain Bike Challenge,” said Megaw.

“We are sure this investment will go a long way in making the race more prestigious and a great showcase for the city.

“We would also like to name some of our associate sponsors who have come on board to make this a fantastic event, with Refreshhh! who are supplying drinks on the day and for our goodie bags, Volvo who are supporting us on the roads with their vehicles and Vodacom and Just Properties who will be supplying us with some great luck draw prizes.”

Store entries for the cycle tour and mountain bike events close this afternoon at 2pm.

Anyone still interested in entering can enter online at www.dispatchcycletour.co.za or late entries can be done on Friday and Saturday from 1pm-7pm at Buffs.

The weekend’s action gets under way with the Mountain Bike Challenge taking place on Saturday morning with the cycle tour following on Sunday.
