Border in search of first win in Northerns clash

Cricket action is heating on the Border as the semi-professional team head into their third Sunfoil 3-day Cup match of the season hunting their first win.

They take on Northerns with the match getting under way at Buffalo Park tomorrow and after two draws against North West and Free State so far, Border will be gunning for a win.

The team will then play their third one day challenge match against the same opponents on Sunday, having won their first match and then losing the second.

Two changes have been made to the Border squad since their last outings against Free State two weeks ago, with the main change seeing Christiaan Jonker called into the Warriors set-up for their T20 campaign.

“Losing Jonker was a big blow for us. He has been in good form this season and with Jerry also unavailable due to Warriors commitments it has left us with a bit of an inexperienced batting line up,” claimed Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“But our batsmen have been in good form this season and I trust the senior guys to lead by example.”

The other change sees Sithembele Langa dropping out in a rotational switch, while Sinovuyo Ntuntwana comes back into the Border mix along with Phumzile Majaja who could be set to make a possible debut for the semi-pro team.

“The Langa change was purely rotational, he will get more chances later in the season,” explained Plaatjes.

“But for the coming matches we felt we should bring in Majaja, who was supposed to make his debut at the end of last season but the match was washed out, and he may get a chance again when we evaluate the conditions before naming the playing team on Thursday.

“He is a really talented leg spin bowler and if he settles early he can actually be a match winner for us.”

Ntuntwana’s recall will be welcome news for the player as he enjoyed a break out season with Border last season when he made his debut last year, and went on to make seven first class and three one day appearances over the season.

“Ntuntwana has always been a solid performer at this level. He played regularly last season and the fact that he is a swing bowler is always a plus for us,” said Plaatjes.

Tomorrow’s three day match against Northerns will get under way at 10am while Sunday’s one day match will start at 9:30am.

The Border squad for the three-day Cup and One-Day competition matches: Mkhululi Calana, Gionne Koopman, Martin Walters, Darryl Brown, Marco Marais, Sinovuyo Ntuntwana, Mncedisi Malika, Phaphama Fojela, Thandolwethu Mnyaka, Sesona Ndwandwa, Avumile Mnci, Clayton Bosch, Phumzile Majaja
