Chippa United coach Dan “Dance” Malesela says his team needs to find a way to tighten their porous defence.

“We need to stop conceding goals,” a disappointed Malesela said after Chippa’s 2-1 loss to Cape Town City FC at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat was the Chilli Boys’ third in the Premier Soccer League having previously lost to Golden Arrows and Bidvest Wits.

The loss was also Chippa’s first defeat at home this season.

The Port Elizabeth side created many chances in the first half but once again they just could not find the back of the net.

Chippa have now dropped to 10th position on the log with nine points from eight matches.

“We needed to take our chances and we probably would not be talking the same score or the same story now,” Malesala said.

“Also on the flip side of it, when you don’t score you need to make sure that you don’t concede. When we conceded it put a lot of pressure on us.

“We really need to be solid at the back. If you don’t concede you never lose games and there is always a chance that we will get one.

“So, we just need to be more solid at the back and more disciplined than we are. We have to do something to get the ball in the net.

“The biggest challenge of it all is to see us converting our chances that we are creating...”

It was the visitors who opened the score sheet in the first half.

Lebogang Manyama netted from a penalty that was awarded to City, after one of their players was brought down in the box.

Judas Moseamedi of City doubled the lead for his team in the second half.

Chippa managed to get one in through seasoned striker Katlego Mashego, who was fouled in the box and he took the penalty.

Although the goal rejuvenated the Chilli Boys, it was too late for the side to challenge for a victory.

Chippa tried their best to sneak an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game but their attempts were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the victory saw The Citizens move to second spot on the log.

City coach Eric Tinkler said he was happy with the team’s result as this was their third consecutive win.

“I am definitely happy with today’s win. We are sitting on nine games with 17 points. We set ourselves a target to be where we are.

“So, I would not say it is a surprise for us being where we are because we believe we can do it.”

Asked where he would like to finish on the log this season, the former Bafana Bafana player said: “I want to see myself finish as high as possible.

“That is important. But I say again, the sooner we can get

to the 30-points mark, the better.”

Chippa’s next league fixture is against Orlando Pirates at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tomorrow evening at 7.30pm.
