2016 Rugby season kicked-off with a bang

This year’s school rugby season got under way with a bang at the weekend as the annual Border Schools Rugby Day was hosted at Selborne College on Saturday.

A total of 22 teams from 21 schools turned out to play their first games of the season.

“The event was spectacular with the boys showcasing their talent,” Border schools representative Mtobeli Kweliti said.

“It was a full house as usual and the game of rugby was on full show.”

The final game of the day saw Selborne take on Hoërskool Grens in what turned out to be a very exciting clash as Selborne just managed to win 19-10.

“Grens played an excellent game of rugby and they nearly caused an upset over the hosts in their own backyard,” said Kweliti.

“They were leading the match by 10 points to five, but they lost focus in the dying minutes, leaking 14 points as a result.”

It thus was a fitting end to a day that saw some tight match-ups, as well as a few mismatches where teams managed big wins.

Dale College and Cambridge both claimed comfortable wins on the day, with Dale beating Port Rex 40-0 while Cambridge also managed a clean defensive effort as they beat Maria Louw 29-0.

Queen’s College and Hudson Park High played a more close-fought match, but in the end Queen’s strolled off with a 23-7 win.

Other matches on the A field saw Stirling hammer Mthatha High 63-0 and Lilyfontein cruise to a solid 24-7 victory of Cathcart High.

“The boys absolutely played their hearts out,” said Kweliti.

“All the teams played as well as they could in their first match of the season.”

B field results: Breidbach High

33-0 Gonubie High; Tsholomnqa High 0-19 De Vos Malan; Sport Focus Schools 14-8 Stutterheim High; George Randall High 7-48 ZK Matthews; Selborne 2nd XV 40-3 Chief Henry Boklein.

Also adding interest to the day was that it is traditionally used as the first round of trials for selectors to get a first look at the players who could possibly turn out for the Border Coke Week team later in the year.

“This year’s event was a success – like the previous years,” said Kweliti.
