Koutroulis scores Chippa return

Chippa United have re-appointed the evergreen Peter Koutroulis to the position of chief executive of the club.

Chippa announced the news yesterday saying Koutroulis had already hit the ground running in a position he held at the same club before leaving at the end of last season.

Club chairman Chippa Mpengesi said rehiring Koutroulis was a strategic business decision.

“We rehired him to bolster the club because, as Chippa United grows, it is a lot of responsibility to run it, and we need people of Peter’s calibre,” said Mpengesi.

“Administration is key to the success of any club, especially at this level, and Peter comes with a lot of experience in this job.”

According to Mpengesi, with the club planning to adopt both Port Elizabeth and East London as their home cities next season, together with “other big plans”, it was necessary to beef up manpower.

Koutroulis, a former Mamelodi Sundowns general manager, expressed his happiness, describing his relationship with Mpengesi a “very good one”.

He said: “I love the club, I respect the man and am very honoured to be back home.

“Chippa United is a brand that is growing fast and I want to be part of that growth and vision.”

His first stint with the Chilli Boys’ was not without controversy.

He was accused by then head coach Roger Sikhakhane of masterminding exit from the club. Sikhakhane accused him of interference.

But, Mpengesi yesterday said “there was no truth” to the accusations.

Laying out what was expected of Chippa’s chief executive, he said: “His main job will be to give support to the technical team and ensure the welfare of all our players and stakeholders.”

Mpengesi said bringing in Koutroulis before the end of the season was a calculated move as the focus had now shifted to preparing for next season.

“We have achieved our mandate for this season, which was to maintain our status in the top flight, and this appointment is part of our plan for next season where we at least want to get a silver medal in one of the competitions or even win some silverware.”
