Chippa to fight tough for that top-eight spot

Chippa United skipper James Okwuosa believes a win against Golden Arrows today will move them a step closer to achieving their mandate this season – to finish in the top-eight on the Absa Premier League table. The Port-Elizabeth based side play Arrows at East London’s Buffalo City Stadium (kick-off 3pm).

The Chilli Boys managed to collect four points from their two previous league games and will want to maintain their good run.

Chippa are seventh on the log with 38 points from 27 matches.

Only two points separate them and their opponents – Abafana Bes’thende – who are ninth on the log. Okwuosa is aware that today’s game will not be an easy one, as Arrows are also chasing a top-eight finish.

He is however confident that with the help of their Buffalo City supporters they will be able to collect three points against the Durban side. “We are very confident. The training session has been very good,” he said.

“Apart from Rhulani (Manzini) who is injured, for the past week now I think the team spirit has been high.

“In the past two games we played, we had good results and earned four points.

“We got three points at home and one point in an away draw. That is very good for the team. When it comes to this Golden Arrows game, I think it’s a do-or-die clash.

“This is one of the games that will determine if we are going to get the top-eight position on the log,” the skipper said.

“I think with the support that we are getting at Buffalo City it will help us to perform well.”

Even though Chippa beat Arrows 2-1 when the sides met earlier in the season, the Nigerian defender said they were expecting a very tough game against in-form Arrows today.

The visitors will be coming to the Eastern Cape oozing confidence after collecting six points in their two previous league games.

They beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 4-2, followed by a 1-0 win against Free State Stars.

“Golden Arrows now are doing very well if you look at their last few games,” said Okwuosa.

“We should be expecting a very tough game. They are coming prepared to Buffalo City Stadium, and for anybody who knows football, when a crowd is backing their team it can motivate your opponents.

“When you play good football there is no doubt that the fans will cheer you on.

“They also want to go the top-eight and seeing the points on the log they are not that far from us. So that is what makes this game so crucial,” he added.
