Battle lines are drawn as the Border Bulldogs take on the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias in a Currie Cup qualification clash at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia today.

It is a match between two teams in the lower half of the qualification log as they head into the final stages of the competition.

The Bulldogs started the season in style, winning three games on the trot, but since then they have lost six and only won one of their seven games, seeing them slide to 11th on the current log.

They still have four matches left and the team will be desperate to finish well and try and get their win ratio above 50%.

“People come to the stadium to support a winning team and although we started the season well, we are not winning now, so we are looking to get back to winning ways,” said Bulldogs coach Elliot Fana.

“We want to finish the season well and take that momentum into the next competition.”

The Welwitschias have endured a torrid tournament so far.

They have lost all 11 of their games and only picked up one bonus point the whole season, leaving them rooted at the foot of the table.

They will thus be even more desperate for a win and they will figure, with most of their national players back, playing at home and against an up- and-down Border side they may have a chance.

“No team can be taken for granted.

“The Welwitschias have not had a great season but they are still a dangerous team, especially at home and we must not be complacent,” said Fana.

The Bulldogs should, however, be able to register a comfortable win and claim a full house of points from the match.

They have shown that they have the talent to mix it with the best of them and the team should be confident of getting a comfortable victory.

“The guys are always confident, especially after a good week of training like we have just had and they are looking forward to the match,” said Fana.

After this match the last three games of the season for the Bulldogs are against the Blue Bulls, Western Province and Free State, so it is even more important for them to get a good win to build confidence ahead of those three big matches.

“To get a good result against the Welwitschias will give the team some much needed confidence to tackle the last few games of the competition,” said Fana.

“Playing the unions is always a good test for the team as some of these players have played Super Rugby and other big competitions, so it is good to play against players of this calibre which gives them an indication of where they match up.”

Today’s match kicks off at 4pm and the Bulldogs will be back home against the Blue Bulls next weekend.
