An action-packed day is expected in the C Division of the University Sport South Africa Rugby week as teams push for Varsity Shield qualification.

Things are hotting up as hosts Walter Sisulu University (WSU), fellow-Eastern Cape side Rhodes University, Cape Town’s Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and KwaZulu-Natal's University of Zululand, prepare for Friday’s C Division clashes.

WSU take on CPUT in a mouthwatering clash as both teams go for the jugular.

WSU opened their rugby week with an error-strewn, but a solid, 22-3 victory over Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) on Monday, with a good defensive effort that didn’t allow their tryline to be breached.

WSU will however need to be sharper against CPUT as they will not be as forgiving as MUT were, and if they can cut down on the handling errors, their attack will be a key weapon in the match.

“The boys are excited ahead of the match and we will be ready for it,” WSU coach Sipho Metula said.

“We made a number of mistakes and handling errors in the first game that we will be working on, but our defence was solid and we showed at times what we can do on attack, so I am confident we can get it right against CPUT.”

CPUT began their week with a bang as they thumped Vaal University of Technology (VUT) 40-19, in a very open match and will be confident heading into the WSU game. Rhodes claimed a good 26-12 win over the University of Limpopo, but the scoreline could have been bigger, if their kickers did not miss all four conversion attempts.

They will be confident heading into the Zululand clash and will be banking on their forwards to set a strong platform for their exciting backline to launch attacks.

“We were happy to get a first win, although not as convincing as we were hoping for,” Rhodes coach Qondakele Sompondo said.

“We did not tick all the boxes, but we spoke about it after the game and it is something we will learn from. We have to work on our finishing in the strike zone as we were a bit weak there and we will look to address that in the next game.”

Zululand snatched a close 22-20 victory over the University of Venda, in which one missed conversion separated the two sides at fulltime.

Zululand will be aiming to use the same kind of grit shown to come out victorious in that match, against Rhodes and will hope to edge out the oppostion, in what could be another close battle.

The four sides will be playing on the same field tomorrow, with Rhodes and Zululand kicking off on Old Selbornians’s A field at 10.10am.

The WSU v CPUT clash follows straight afterwards with kick-off at 11.50am.

Other C Division matches are on the same field as VUT front up against MUT on Old Selbornians’ B field at 11.50am and Venda take on Limpopo at 3.10pm.
