Schoolboy action kicks off

Exciting schoolboy rugby action kicks off today when the Coca-Cola U18 Craven Week and Academy Week get under way at Kearsney College in KwaZulu-Natal.

The two events run concurrently, and will see South Africa’s best schoolboy players battling it out for their regional teams over a week.

The Border Academy Week team will be getting their week underway today, and the team are excited to get their campaign up and running.

“We are ready and excited about the competition; the boys believe in what we want to achieve and as coaches we have the faith in them – that they will do it,” said Border Academy Week coach Reinhard Gerber.

Their first match is against the Griquas Country Districts team, and Border will want a win to get them off on the right foot.

“Griquas Country Districts are an unknown entity for us, which makes them dangerous,” said Gerber.

“We just want to focus on what we want to do, dominating our set-pieces and getting into our shape moving the ball across the field.

“The first game is always difficult, with a lot of nerves, and if we can get into our stride things should favour us.”

It is set to be the start of a long week of tough clashes, and if Border can get off to a winning start, they will be drawn against better opposition as the week goes by.

With the next round of fixtures only being decided on after day two’s fixtures, Border will have all their focus on the match at hand.

“There is no easy game in this week, and as a matter of fact, only gets more difficult with each game, as teams get better and the opposition tougher, especially when you win,” said Gerber.

“And three games in six days is not easy.

“It will be very important for us to manage our players and keep them happy, and be well prepared and see what our opposition are like.”

The Border Country Districts team start their Academy Week tomorrow against the Pumas Country Districts team, in the first match of the morning.

The Border Craven Week team get their campaign up and running tomorrow as well when they play the Blue Bulls in the main match of the day, which will be broadcast live on SuperSport, kicking off at 3.10pm.

The Border CD Craven Week side start their week against the Limpopo Blue Bulls tomorrow, with their match, to be broadcast live on SuperSport, starting at 9.20am.

Today’s Border Academy match against Griquas CD kicks off at 10.40am.
