Day of destiny for Fana

Qumbu-born boxer Mzonke Fana is confident of rewriting boxing history by dethroning unbeaten British star Terry Flanagan when they clash for the WBO lightweight crown at Ice Arena, in Cardiff, Wales, tonight.

At 42 years old, Fana will become the oldest SA boxer to challenge for a major world boxing title.

He will enter as a heavy underdog as he will face a boxer who is 15 years his junior and is at the pinnacle of his career.

But Fana has not enjoyed a good run in the lightweight division which he had previously renounced as his natural weight, preferring to campaign in the junior lightweight category.

He was stopped in four rounds by Namibian Paulus Moses and lost a brutal fight to Aliwal North-born Sipho Taliwe although he avenged the loss a few years later.

His performance against Ndongeni, albeit a loss, was arguably his best in the division.

Although he scored a pair of stoppage wins over two local boxers Xolani Mcotheli and Vusumzi Bokolo, those opponents are nowhere near world class level.

Champ’s last five opponents:

2016-03-12. Vusumzi Bokolo TKO 7

2015-12-18 Xolani Mcotheli TKO 8

2015-11-11 Hedi Slimani L

2015-10-16 Sipho Taliwe W

2015-08-28 Said Zungu W
