Cross-country running takes centre-stage this weekend as the annual Border Cross-Country Championships gets under way at the Beacon Bay Country Club tomorrow morning.
Primary, high school and open athletes will all be taking part in the day’s action.
“We are all set up and ready for Saturday morning and looking forward to holding another successful Border champs,” said race organiser Barry Adcock.
In all, around 400 runners are expected to take on the course in this year’s championships.
The race will also be held as a qualifier for schoolchildren looking to make the team to compete at the Eastern Cape champs.
“We are hoping for at least 400 runners to take part this year,” said Adcock. “For the schools it is a qualifier for runners to make the team to go to Aliwal North for the Eastern Cape champs, so we should see some very competitive running in those age divisions.”
Some changes have also been made to this year’s race to entice more running clubs to get involved.
“We have started a senior relay competition which we will be holding for the first time,” said Adcock.
“It will be a lot of fun and I think it will be very competitive and should make things interesting for the clubs.”
The running kicks off at 8.30am tomorrow and final events will start from 11.10am.
