Five boys have been selected to represent the Eastern Cape in the top100 Vodacom Next Level soccer talent search campaign.

The campaign aims at giving budding soccer players between the ages of 14 and 16 the opportunity to be coached and mentored by two of South Africa’s best loved legends, Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe.

At the end of the search, the winning team will be awarded with an education scholarship to Tuks Sports High School.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Alizwa Thu from Dimbaza said he was very excited to be part of the competition.

“I heard about the competition from my cousin and entered immediately. Soccer is my passion and I really want to go far with it,’’ he said.

Damian Ruiters, Mziwethemba Malima, Aphelele Maloni and Lindokuhle Nohavu, who are from East London, are the other boys who secured enough votes and will be representing the province.

The boys where whisked away to Pretoria to be part of the soccer boot camp. During the week, players will be trained and tested on their skills by soccer legends Lucas Radebe, Mark Fish and former Banyana Banyana U17 captain, Shorty Dludlu.

“Vodacom has had a long history empowering South Africans through technology. As our youth demographic continues to grow, it was very important for us to create an engaging platform that allows young people to live their passion and realise their dreams, through the discovering and nurturing of different talents,” said Vodacom brand director Mzamo Masito.

To enter the competition, players had to register, record themselves doing one of four drills and upload the video on to the Next Level website. Players then had to secure votes from fans, family and friends to make it to the next level.

Today 32 players will be selected to play in the final two teams that will take each other on in a live match that will be broadcast this Saturday. — Qaqamba@dispatch.co.za
