Victorious Penguins again prove Border is tops in SA

As if the absolute dominance of Border Women is not enough, East London-based ladies rugby club – Penguins, successfully defended their national women’s club rugby championships.

This they did in style, winning all their three matches convincingly.

Penguins started their campaign by clobbering George Maoris by a staggering 59-0 before defeating neighbours – Kwaru by 28-5 and they finished off by emerging 31-0 victors against Western Cape champs Milnerton in the final.

In the tournament, the East London outfit conceded only one try – five points while they scored 118 points.

Penguins also scooped two tournament player awards. Consistently accurate flyhalf Zintle Mphupha was named backline player of the tournament, while Cindy Booi was the forward player of the tournament.

Penguins, formed in 1999, have only lost five matches since their formation, and the club as produced more than 20 Women Springboks.

They may well be referred to as the greatest women’s rugby side in Africa and among the best in the world. Penguins head coach Andy Mtshotshisa said their latest victory was a team effort.

It was even more of a feat because several of their key players were unable to play, including Nwabisa Ngxathu, Nosi Goda, Elloise Webb, Maryka Kirchoff and Amanda Tshidi.

Penguins qualified for the national championships after clobbering their arch rivals Winter Rose by 28-14 in the domestic league final. Emphasising that their victory at the national champs was a team effort, Mtshotshisa said one player who deserved special praise was Mandisa William.

“Despite being the coordinator of women’s rugby at the Border Rugby Union and having captained the national team for a long time, it speaks volumes of her humility to be still playing club rugby,” said Mtshotshisa.

“Mara commands a lot of respect from the other players ... But with other experienced players such as Booi, Williams and Mpupha, we were always going to defend our title ...”

Penguins add to what has been a great year for Border on the national stage in women’s rugby after the provincial side, which is ironically comprised mostly of Penguins players, were crowned national champs for the fourth time on the trot. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
