Border to fire on all fronts for openers

A strong squad mixed with experience and youth has been named for Border’s first two matches of the 2016-17 cricket season against North West getting under way later this week.

Border playing their first Sunfoil Cup three-day match and one-day competition matches of the season will be looking to get off to a good start on both fronts.

“I believe that we have named the strongest possible squad for our first two games,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“We will look to go with our strongest team in the three-day game and then we have a couple of youngsters who we will look to give some game time in the one-day match.”

North West have already started their season with a three-day draw and one-day win over KwaZulu-Natal, so will head into the match with confidence.

Border will need to hit the ground running and make sure that they are sharp from the word go if they want to start the season on a positive note.

Border have always been a good bowling team, but the batsmen will also need to come to the party as well.

“I think that our top five batsmen are going to be key in this match, because a good first innings total normally puts you in a strong position, so that is what we are going to be looking for,” said Plaatjes.

“Our bowling is then always sharp and I trust them to do their job in the match.”

A number of Border’s players are coming off a good weekend of club cricket and they will look to carry that form into this match.

Captain Martin Walters struck an unbeaten century and all-rounder Marco Marais scored 100 on the dot for Bohemians, while bowlers Thandolwethu Mnyaka, 4/37, and Darryl Brown, 3/23, put in good shifts for Middledrift and Willows respectively.

“It is always good for players to put in good performances for their clubs before a big match as it puts the guys in a good frame of mind and I hope they can build on that momentum in the match against North West,” said Plaatjes.

If Border can start the season with two wins it will give them the perfect start and put them in a confident frame of mind to make an assault on both the three-day and one-day fronts this season, while North West themselves will be looking to build on their solid start to their campaigns.

The Border v North West Sunfoil Cup match gets under way tomorrow morning at 9am, and the one-day game starts at 9.30am on Sunday morning.

The Border squad for the Sunfoil Cup and One-Day competition matches: Mkhululi Calana, Gionne Koopman, Martin Walters, Darryl Brown, Marco Marais, Ayabulela Gqamane, Mncedisi Malika, Phaphama Fojela, Thandolwethu Mnyaka, Sesona Ndwandwa, Avumile Mnci, Clayton Bosch, Christiaan Jonker.
