A final over showdown ended with Border sealing a nailbiting three-run win over North West in their CSA one day challenge match at Buffalo Park yesterday.

Border scored 270 all out batting first, with North West falling just short on 267/7 at the end of their 50 overs.

With nine needed off the last over, Border opening bowler Clayton Bosch showed nerves of steel to concede just three runs off his first three balls, bowl Brady Barends (9) with the fourth and then concede just two more singles to make sure Border began their one day campaign with a win.

North West opener Richardt Frenz (96no) was left unbeaten, not able to steer his side over the line despite a heroic effort.

North West’s chase got off to a rocky start as Janneman Malan (0) and Wihan Lubbe (11) lost their wickets to Border’s Phaphama Fojela and Thandolwethu Mnyaka respectively as they slipped to 29/2 in the eighth over.

Then Frenz and Andre Malan steadied the ship with an impressive 95-run partnership, with Malan then out for 54 caught by Aya Gqamane off the bowling of Bosch.

Marques Ackerman (15) and Isaac Dikgale (32) then shared important partnerships with Frenz as they chipped away at the total. Frenz brought up his half century and at 201/5 in the 40th over it was still anyone’s game.

Lesego Senokwane (30) and Frenz then took North West to within sight of the win before Fojela bowled Senokwane with the visitors on 248/6.

In the morning under heavy cloud cover North West won the toss and elected to field. It seemed to be a shrewd move when Border opening batsman Gionne Koopman was bowled for a duck off the first ball of the match by Siviwe Gidana and fellow opener Mkhululi Calana (15) was caught to become Gidana’s second scalp, leaving Border on 32/2.

However, this then brought Christiaan Jonker to the crease to join Martin Walters and they put Border in command with a dominant partnership. Walters played the anchor role superbly while allowing Jonker the freedom to play his natural attacking game and the two guided Border past 150 with both Jonker and Walters bringing up their half centuries in the process.

Their entertaining 147-run stand was finally broken soon after Jonker brought up his century off a blistering 68 deliveries in the 32nd over.

Barends then bowled new man Darryl Brown for a four- ball duck to claim two wickets in the over and reduce Border to 179/3.

Marco Marais (17) didn’t last long, before Aya Gqamane came to the crease and promptly took centre stage as he dominated a quick fire 49- run partnership with Walters, belting his way to 38 off 16 balls (5x4; 2x6) before he was caught and bowled.

Border had been on 259/5 prior to Gqamane’s wicket and well on course to score over 300, but they then had a lower order collapse.

Their final five wickets fell for just 11 runs as Walters followed Gqamane for a solid 81, and the final three Border wickets were all dismissed for ducks, leaving Mncedisi Malika unbeaten on seven, with Border 270 all out off 45.3 overs.
