Langa gets break for Border spot

Just one change was made to the Border squad set to do battle against Free State in Sunfoil three-day Cup and CSA one-day competition action in Bloemfontein over the next four days.

The change was enforced after Aya Gqamane was called up to the Warriors squad for their Sunfoil Series match against the Lions in Johannesburg.

His spot has been taken by Sithembele Langa, who has been on Border’s radar, and his impressive performances for the Border rural side has seen him brought into the semi-pro fold.

“Langa has been a part of the squad before and has been playing very well recently, so we are happy to have him back in the fold,” said Border coach Frank Plaatjes.

“I firmly believe that if he is called on to do a job he will perform well for us.”

With the rest of the squad unchanged, however, Border will take a lot of momentum into the Free State match after their solid showing against North West this past weekend.

A good draw in the three-day and a win in the one-day match will have given the team a boost.

“It is good to have the rest of the guys unchanged. It gives us some important continuity and the players are rewarded for their good play in the first two games,” said Plaatjes.

“We need to build on our performances against North West and make sure we continue performing at a very high level.”

Free State also played out a competitive draw in their opening three day game of the season against Easterns. However, they followed that up by losing the one-day match, so they will be eager to bounce back against Border.

Border should be the sharper of the two sides as they head into the match having played this past weekend, whereas Free State played their matches in the first weekend of October, and have not played together since.

If Border can use that to get off to a good start this morning it will set them up well for the rest of the match.

“We will need to check on the conditions first before the match before we decide what we want to do first,” said Plaatjes.

“But Bloemfontein is usually a very good batting wicket, so we will need our top five to be on form again and put on a big first innings score to put us in charge.”

Today’s match kicks off at the Mangaung Oval at 10am, with the subsequent one-day match then set to get under way at the same ground at 9.30am on Sunday morning.

The Border squad for the three-day Cup and One-Day competition matches: Mkhululi Calana, Gionne Koopman, Martin Walters, Darryl Brown, Marco Marais, Sithembele Langa, Mncedisi Malika, Phaphama Fojela, Thandolwethu Mnyaka, Sesona Ndwandwa, Avumile Mnci, Clayton Bosch, Christiaan Jonker.
