Heart pumping sweaty bodies twisting and turning were the order of the day on Saturday morning at the City Hall during the “Mass Aerobic Workout Sessions”.

The Saturday sessions are a build-up to the main ‘On Point Aerobics Marathon’ event, which will be the first ever aerobics marathon held in the Eastern Cape.

Over 100 fitness fanatics filled up the City Hall despite the chilly weather for the session, which was led by professional fitness instructors who brought their A-game and high impact exercises.

Moving to the latest and fast-paced pop songs, the session kicked off with warmup and stretching, followed by HI LOs, Kata Box, Step, Functional and Zumba.

Event organiser Luvo Clive Sihlai said the sessions started two months ago, ahead of the Saimsa games. They were initially held to help the BCM team to train and prepare for the games.

Because the sessions were open to everyone, social media was abuzz with calls to bring the event back.

“Some people come from disadvantaged communities where they do not have access to gym facilities, some cannot afford to go to gym whereas some don’t have time to go for gym and these sessions and the marathon serve to address those issues,” said Sihlali.

BCM sports chairman, Thandy Matebese, said the municipality supported the initiative as it was in keeping with BCM’s emphasis on promoting healthy lifestyles, especially among its employees.

“We as BCM have partnered up with On Point so that members of the club can participate in the aerobic marathon to keep fit in order to be able to defend our title as Saimsa champs in 2017,” said Matebese.

The On Point Aerobics Marathon takes place on November 12 at the Orient Theatre.

According to the organisers, one of the aims of the marathon is to teach people that aerobics does not always have to be in a gym or indoors.

Government departments, municipalities, corporates, universities and individuals are invited to take part in the event.
