Chippa United coach Dan “Dance” Malesela believes his half-time rant is what spurred his players on to their dramatic 3-1 PSL victory over Kaizer Chiefs at NMB Stadium on Saturday.
A late brace from Lerato Manzini and another strike from Tshwarelo Bereng saw Chippa United end their seven-match winless streak against the Amakhosi on Saturday evening.
The Port Elizabeth side came back from 1-0 down in the first half to clinch their third league win of the season.
Malesela said it was his act of throwing a tantrum in the changing room during the break which got his players motivated.
“I said to the players if you want to see me fired, because I am on the brink of that, then carry on playing like that. But with a very serious face,” Malesela smiled.
“I knew that I had to pull a stunt. One had to play a lot of mind games in the change room to get the players motivated and to help them really want to fight for this victory.
“So, I had to pull some faces and I think it worked. I am very appreciative that in the end we scored more than one goal after quite some time of not scoring.”
The coach said he was happy with the win and that the victory will give the team a bit of time to breathe and reflect before their next game against Polokwane City next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a disappointed Chiefs coach Steve Komphela said it was just not their day.
“There is only one result that works at Chiefs and that is a win,” Komphela said.
“A draw is not good, you cannot even think of losing. Personally if you are competitive enough in a game of cards you wouldn’t want to lose.
“But then when the outcome is there you can’t look back. You have to deal with the
situation and start moving forward.
“Losing doesn’t feel nice. It’s not a nice experience especially with the expectations and the support that we have we cannot afford to even draw matches.”
The coach said it was always going to be tough playing against the Chilli Boys. He said people should also acknowledge the fact that Chippa are playing good soccer.
“Compliments must also be given to Dan. For us we had a good first half and we got the first goal of the match.
“I thought a second one would be coming. We did get chances to take it to 2-0 and make it difficult for them.
“But again we waited until the moment where they had two goals back-to-back and they were highly optimistic.
“I think we defended badly. We gave too much space on our left back side and also we couldn’t deal with the crosses.
“So, two balls coming from our left side. Not a good day, a bad day completely but then you have to compliment the opposition for taking their chances.
“We did have and we didn’t take our chances, but again it becomes more like a stuck record. So we just have to dust ourselves and move on.”
