Sisters are doing it for themselves as they eye pro ranks

The Duma sisters look forward to showing off their skills on Friday at the West Bank golf course for a golf day against some of the best golfers in the Border region.

After being announced as professional golfers last year the Mdantsane-born golfers Siviwe, 28, and Yolanda Duma, 26, have been on a quest for financial aid.

In an attempt to raise funds for their upcoming season the two will participate in a four-ball golf match.

This consists of two teams made of two players who compete directly against each other.

The entry fee is R400 per person which adds up to the R1600 per four-ball fee.

“This is just one step towards the right direction in our careers and I am quite happy about it,” said Siviwe.

She added that the success of the event will mean a lot to them because they had been battling getting sponsors.

According to Siviwe the teams have not yet been selected because the game is open to anyone who would like to play.

“Registration is almost full and it is going to be such a big thing,” said Yolanda.

The pair have a long-term goal of featuring in the European Tour in the next two years.

“We want to play in the European tour. However, for now we need to play a lot of local tournaments to gain the experience,” she added.

This golf day, Yolanda said, was a means of further sharpening their skills.

The golf sensation expressed her concerns regarding playing the sport without a fulltime sponsor, saying it is difficult to focus solely on golf as the weight of a financial struggle rests on their shoulders.

The golf day is part of the Port Festival on Saturday and Sunday.

After five years of waiting the festival is finally here, and is set to put the East London harbour alight over the weekend, with fun activities for the family.

Such activities include harbour racing, featuring hard-bottom boats, jet-skis, rubber ducks and yachts, as well as the presence of a South African navy vessel, which will be open to the public.
