The Fort Hare Blues emerged victorious after an epic tussle against the Walter Sisulu University All Blacks in their Border Super League club match at the Davidson Stadium in Alice on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues claimed a 30-25 win to gain a bit of revenge after they were beaten by the All Blacks in last year’s club encounter.

“I was very happy with the guys. It was a really tough encounter,” said Fort Hare coach Ntyatyambo Mkhafu.

The Blues looked to be heading for a comfortable win after taking a strong lead into the halftime break.

However, the All Blacks came storming back in the second half, taking the lead before the Blues fought back to claim an impressive win.

“We were leading 14-3 at halftime, but they came back in the second half and took the lead, and then we retook the lead in the last two or three minutes and held on for the win,” said Mkhafu.

“I think we just wanted it more than the WSU guys on the day.”

Despite managing a win the Blues slip to second place on the Super League log on points difference, after Swallows drew level with them after a big win.

Both teams thus still stay just in touching distance of the competition pacesetters MPM Old Selbornians and makes sure they have not pulled away completely.

“We are in a very good position and it makes this weekend’s match against Old Boys very important,” said Mkhafu.

“If we can get a win there we will still be in with a chance of finishing top of the log.”

Old Boys, however, continued their unbeaten run in the competition, racking up a good 25-17 win over Buffs at Mike Pendock Motors Park on Saturday.

It was their ninth win in a row in the league and solidified their hold on top spot on the log. They will be favourites when they take on the Blues over the coming weekend.

The 2016 Border Super League champs Swallows cruised to a dominant 31-0 win over Breakers to stay in the hunt and will look to take advantage of the situation when first and third on the log play each other this weekend.

lOther results on the weekend saw Police looking back to their best with a thumping 57-5 victory over Winter Rose at Police Park, Berlin Tigers claiming a solid 18-12 away win over Ntlaza Lions and Ocean Sweepers picking up their second win of this year’s campaign, beating Cambridge 31-22.

This coming weekend will see the 10th round of Super League action battled out.
