New coach vows to fire up Tornado

Mdantsane team Tornado has promoted goalkeeper coach Tshepo Motsoeneng to the hot seat after Thobela Bikwani quit last week.

The last straw for the former Bush Bucks player was the humiliating 3-0 loss to EC Bees in their ABC Motsepe League game at the Bhisho Stadium.

Bikwani, who guided Tornado to the ABC Motsepe League throphy last season quit via a text message to club boss Siphiwo “Mawawa” Nyobo after the sting by Bees.

Nyobo told the Dispatch that he did not object when Bikwani told him he was leaving the team.

“Tornado is a big team so you cannot be on position five on the log. I think the pressure got to him and he cannot say the team was already in position five when he took over because he started the season as the coach.

“When he took over he told us that when the time comes when he cannot handle being in charge any longer, he would tell us and that is exactly what he did,” he said.

Motsoeneng started his stint at the helm on a positive note when Tornado dismantled bottom of the table Morning Stars 4-1 at the weekend.

The former Chippa United shot-stopper has been tasked with taking Tornado over the finishing line. Motsoeneng said he was up to the challenge. He promised that in their remaining games, Tornado will not only play attractive football but score goals too.

“I don’t just want to score one goal. Yes, there will be 1-0 but I want to score five or six goals so that people will see that you dominated.

“It’s up to the chairman to keep me permanently but I’m ready to work. The type of football that I like to play will attract more players to Tornado next season, whether under my guidance or under someone else’s guidance,” he said.

Thrashing Stars took the Mdantsane outfit to fifth position with 34 points and 14 points behind log-leaders Future Tigers.

Motsoeneng said he hopes to finish in a respectable position this season as winning the league is almost out of the question.

Meanwhile, Tigers tightened their grip at the summit with a 1-0 victory over Matta Milan at the weekend.

Tigers’ close rivals, EC Bees suffered their first defeat of the season against a 10-man Swartkops Valley United Brothers on Friday.

Log-leaders, Tigers have won 15, drew three and lost only two games of their 20 games with 48 points in the bag.

Bees, who were expected to flatten Subs, are close by at second with 44 points from 19 games – with 13 victories, five draws and a single loss.

Third-placed Lion City FC dropped two points when they were held to a 1-1 draw by ninth-placed Highbury in a Nelson Mandela Bay derby.

Callies narrowly edged Walter Sisulu University 3-2, Mthatha City drew 1-1 with Young Ideas while Mighty Bucks played to a goalless draw with Matatiele Professionals.
