Bittersweet mix of victory, defeat

A youthful Border team crashed to a heavy eight-wicket defeat at the hands of South Western Districts during their CSA Provincial One-day Competition clash at Buffalo Park yesterday afternoon.

Having claimed a big seven-wicket win in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup clash that ended on Saturday morning, the Border team could unfortunately not take that momentum into the one-day, possibly due to five changes having been made to the team.

However, with three players under the age of 20 – debutants Jason Niemand and Akhona Mnyaka, as well as Kabelo Sekhukhune – coming into the side, Border is clearly looking to the future.

Having set SWD a below-par 180 to win, the visitors got off to the perfect start as Niel Hornbuckle and Glenton Stuurman shared 68 for the opening wicket.

Border all-rounder Darryl Brown then removed both openers to leave SWD on 86/2, Hornbuckle for 28 and then Stuurman for an attacking 43-ball 52 (9x4; 1x6) with both caught behind by keeper Avumile Mnci.

Andrea Agathangelou then dominated an unbeaten 94-run partnership with Brendon Louw as they eased SWD home with 101 balls remaining – Agathangelou ending on 65 off 51 balls (9x4; 1x6) and Louw on 28.

In the morning session, SWD won the toss and elected to field.

It seemed to be a good call as early wickets had Border floundering on 49/4 in the 15th over.

Captain Gionne Koopman (5), fellow opener Phumzile Majaja (4), Somila Seyibowe (5) and Niemand (5) were all removed cheaply as some really disciplined bowling from SWD had Border in all sorts of trouble.

Marco Marais and Brown attempted to pull Border back into the match, with Marais taking charge of a 42-run partnership.

But just as Border were looking settled, Marais having just reached his half century, was caught by Agathangelou off the bowling of Justin Jordaan for 53 off 65 balls (6x4; 1x6).

Sekhukhune was the next man in and he looked positive in a 44-run stand with Brown, but having struck three boundaries and a wonderful pulled maximum, he was then caught for an 18-ball 23.

Clayton Bosch was then bowled by Siyabonga Booi for a first-ball duck as he claimed two in two balls, with Border 135/6.

Brown looked as though he wanted to be there at the end, but having got Border pass 150 along with Mnci, he became the eighth wicket to fall for 43.

Mnci (18) and Mnyaka for a first-ball duck then fell off consecutive balls as Border were all out for 179.

However, on Saturday’s final day of the three-day match, the home team resumed their second innings on 12/1 needing just 85 runs to win.

Mkhululi Calana (12) and Marais (29) were the only wickets to fall as Border cruised to the win with Koopman (24) and Seyibokwe (16) taking Border over the line.
