New kids on the block are gearing up to compete with the big boys in the ABC Motsepe League for the upcoming season.

Try Again, who were promoted from the SAB League over the weekend at the University of Fort Hare during the provincial SAB League playoffs, are getting set to play in the third-tier league.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, the club chairman Bennie Cook said in the next two weeks the team’s management will be working day and night sorting out the team’s administration processes.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us to make sure we are ready to play when the season commences.

“We are planning to meet with local businesses through Amathole District Municipality to discuss potential sponsorship deals and anyone who is interested in jumping on board should contact me,” he said.

He said they are also planning to meet with provincial sports MEC Pemmy Majodina to consult her on a number of issues such as training fields.

This week a recruitment process will get under way to beef up the club’s management.

“We are currently looking for a qualified coach to guide us from now on and we have already spotted a guy here in Stutterheim who has qualifications, but we haven’t spoken to him as yet. We’ll set up a meeting with him soon,” he said.

The club will hold trials in the next few weeks to find fresh blood to help their campaign, but they are only interested in local players.

“We will play two friendly games very soon to make an assessment of the squad and we are also going to have playoffs to find new talented players,” said Cook.

He says they are not one of those teams who fly to Gauteng or Free State to look for talent “leaving the one’s who helped us to get to the next level starving”.

Cook said Try Again’s presence in the Motsepe League will change lives in the Stutterheim area, which he says has a high crime rate among the youth.

“This promotion is going to improve the standard of living in our area, as we have a high unemployment rate and criminal activity. At the end of the month these boys will be able to put food on the table.

He thanked all the stakeholders who assisted them in their journey.

“Thank you to Amahlathi Local Municipality, our councillor Mrs Busika’s office for the support and Amathole District Municipality for hosting a gala dinner to motivate us, it really paid off,” he said.
