A solid start to their national rugby weeks saw the Border U16 Grant Khomo and U13 Craven Week teams manage good wins on the opening day in Bloemfontein. The Border U16 team started their week on a perfect note as they powered to a 24-13 win over the Golden Lions in the main game of the day on Monday afternoon.

“It was a really good all- round team effort from the guys,” said Border assistant coach Khanyisa Mpumlwana.

“The forwards laid a solid platform for the backs to attack off and after we had a bit of a slow start in the first half we really picked it up in the second,” he said.

It was an impressive performance as the team improved after a scrappy first half where they trailed 5-8 at the break, to run in three more tries in the second half, two converted, while the Lions managed one and a penalty.

Jacques Goosen scored the only try for Border in the first half while the Lions replied with a penalty and try to Henco van Wyk.

In the second half Gugu Mngqibisa, Jarrod Taylor and Matthew Karelse all ran in tries for Border, with Taylor converting the last two, while the Lions scored through Van Wyk again, with Border seeing out a comfortable win.

“The players did execute what we had gone through in the training sessions leading up to the week,” said Mpumlwana.

“But there are still a few things we need to tighten up on before the next game.”

The team’s next game will be a big match against South Western Districts (SWD) at 2.30pm this afternoon.

SWD won their opening match against the Pumas

39-23.

“SWD are always tough to beat. They throw everything they have into every match and have nothing to lose, so we have to match them,” said Mpumlwana.

The Border U13 Craven week side managed a tight

18-15 victory over the Pumas to start their week off well.

In the end goal kicking proved to be the difference as Border flyhalf Bradley Giddy converted one of the team’s tries and slotted over two penalties, with Asha Hoare and Mihle Mitinise dotting down the tries for Border.

In reply the Pumas scored three tries, all unconverted, allowing Border to take the win.

The team’s second game of the week was against the Golden Lions yesterday afternoon, where they just lost a tough encounter 18-12.

The team will play two more games over the week, with their opponents still to be decided.
