After winning 12 games out of 15 in the SAB League – Happy Movers are aiming to fill a void, as there’s no team in Mthatha currently campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League.
Movers will today lock horns with Oceans at Viedgesville and then tomorrow they will host one of the best teams in the league, Mighty Eagles at the Mthatha Sports Field.
The only Mthatha based-team that was playing in the third-tier league – Mthatha City – was recently expelled from the league by the provincial SA Football Association after failing to honour three league fixtures.
The team, originally from Mqanduli and now based in Mthatha, is campaigning for the second season now and coach Boy Boy Mayatula said the love for football in Mthatha was their main driving force.
“People in this area love football and they go all out when there are games being played.
“For example, when Mthatha Bucks plays, they always fill the stadium.
“During the first season we wanted to maintain the status but this season we are going all out in order to get promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.
“This is a five-year project because we are planning to gain promotion to the National First Division by that time.
“We are organised, although we are new in this,” he said.
Movers are at the summit of the logstandings with 43 points after three draws and 15 wins. Mayatula said the aim was to clinch the league title without losing a game, but the most important thing was to help the young players become better men in the future.
“This team is playing a pivotal role in the community, as we all know that drugs are menacing our societies all over the country.
“So we here in Mthatha have that problem as well, and our aim is to encourage the boys to go to school.
“We are using the team as a wagon of change, and our chairman is even paying school fees for some of the players who are studying at King Sabatha Dalindyebo FET College and Unisa. “He’s even found others jobs because he doesn’t want them to stay at the clubhouse all day and just go to train,” he said.
