All braced for some heat in the title battles

The fight fraternity in Port Elizabeth will stage its biggest boxing tournament in many years when the Nelson Mandela Bay Promoters Association (NMBPA) presents a seven-bout card which involves two WBF and a BSA-sanctioned title fights at Nangoza Jebe Hall on Sunday.

NMBPA secretary Sibongile Nkebe paid tribute to the local municipality for its involvement in the tournament.

“We are very excited,” he said before announcing that Anelisa Gungqisa from Walmer and Mziwoxolo Ndwayana from Grahamstown would headline the programme with a 12-rounder for the vacant WBF International welterweight belt.

Both competitors are hoping to make amends following their failures to annex the South African welterweight title.

The title was vacated by Mulovhedzi.

Former South African flyweight champion Xola Sifama from Duncan Village and Siyabonga Blaauw from Uitenhage will meet in the main supporting clash for the WBF’s vacant Africa flyweight belt.

To make sure women are also given the recognition they deserve, the NMBPA included Nomampondomise Xotyeni, the only SA champion in the metro, to defend her junior-lightweight strap against Nozipho Bell from Walmer.

There will be four other undercard bouts featuring young guns.

Boxing action involving SA fighters begins tonight with separate tournaments at James Motlatsi Hall in Klerksdorp and Sandton Convention Centre.

Tshele Kometsi’s TK Boxing Promotions will stage seven bouts, featuring an ABU championship between Koos Sibiya and Kapapu from Namibia, in Klerksdorp while KM Sports of Khaya Majeke will organise six bouts, involving three vacant WBA-sanctioned title fights, in Sandton.

Then tomorrow night Real Steel Promotions of Andre Thysse will stage its tournament to be headlined by an SA heavyweight championship between holder Anton Nel and challenger Osborne Machimana at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

On Sunday, Ilunga “Junior” Makabu will take on Anthony Bellew for the vacant WBC cruiserweight belt in Britain.
