Unbeaten female flyweight fighter Leighandre Jegels breathed a huge sigh of relief when she finally came face-to-face with her first international opponent Liliana Gonzalez at the premedical of their fight at Fitness Joint in Mdantsane this week.
Since the fight was announced Jegels has been having sleepless nights, concerned about the fighting prowess of the Argentinean lass she saw on YouTube.
Gonzalez is a multiple world champion in kickboxing and what Jegels saw on video footage had sent a chill down her spine.
“I thought if she could fight like that, her boxing must be equally good,” she admitted.
But on meeting Gonzalez, the friendly smile the South American gave her immediately calmed her down.
“She is friendly and that has helped me to cool down a bit,” Jegels admitted.
“And she looks nothing like the monster I saw on YouTube. I know she could change in the ring but at least now I am over the shock.”
The fact that Gonzalez has even tasted a defeat, albeit once in three bouts, has had another calming effect on the local 21-year-old.
Jegels is unbeaten in four fights, all by knockouts, but she is not fooling herself in thinking that she will add to her impressive knockout resumé. “I will have to be cautious here and not rush into anything like I used to in my previous fights.
“There is no doubt that this woman can take care of herself so I need to be careful.”
Gonzalez’s fighting experience is reflected by the scars obtained in her 33 years.
Jegels, who also does karate, is gunning for her world title crown next year.
