Border sides in throes of epic battles

THE Buffalo City Stadium will be abuzz today as three Border Rugby teams will be engaged in must-win games.

The Border U19 will lock horns with Griquas at 3pm while Bulldogs have an Absa Currie Cup First Division date with Leopards two hours later.

This before Border Women take on their Western Province (WP) counterparts at 7pm the semis of the Inter-provincial Women A1 competition.

The focus will be on the dominant Border women who will be engaged in a win or lose all encounter.

Their coach Skwiri Kholonza has since vowed that they will give WP a beating “they will never forget again”.

The contest will be a repetition of last year’s final in which Border convincingly emerged victorious by 41-8.

Kholonza expect WP to come for revenge but warned they will meet an improved and more determined Border side better than that of last year.

“They obviously have a score to settle but that will not happen under my watch,” said an overconfident Kholonza.

“Our game plan is that of a running rugby because it has been proven that it is the blueprint to beat Western Province and when you do that you stand a chance to score many tries.”

Border’s women are the only undefeated side in the five-team competition, having won all their five games. This was no time for complacency, added Kholonza.

“We lose tomorrow, we are out of the competition but that is not going to happen because we aim to defend this title having not lost a single game. We cannot disappoint our supporters, this team is their only hope.” In the other semifinal, Eastern Province will meet Blue Bulls at the Central Fields in Uitenhage tomorrow.

On the not so rosy side, the U19s clash should be an interesting one because both the local side and their opponents hold undisputed losing streaks this season.

The former have lost all their six games thus far in the season while the latter have five losses in as many matches. The hosts will be expected to draw solace from this and for a change put a smile on the faces of their fans, with an added advantage of playing at home. Griquas though have not been losing as bad as Border. They were defeated 22-17 by the Pumas last Saturday while the East London side was humiliated 60-5 by the South Western Districts the day before. Border U19 coach Lumumba Currie has however reiterated that the team was in the building phase but fans will expect a win today.

Bulldogs coach Andre Human said his side will dig deep for victory against a Leopards side that has been playing good rugby and currently top of the log.
